ABC's of Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancer types.  In the USA, more than 3.5 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year. Most skin cancers can be detected early by a good skin examination by yourself, your significant other, and your primary care doctor.  If there is a strong family history of skin cancer or if you have already been diagnosed with skin cancer, an annual exam by your dermatologist is a good idea.  If you find a new skin change that won't heal or notice a mole changing, get it checked out. I repeat, dont-ignore-skin-changes-see-your-family-doc-or-dermatologist.
Look for these warning signs:
A (asymmetry): Is the mole asymmetrical?
B (border): Does the mole have an uneven border?
C (color): Is there more than one color in your mole?
D (dimension): Is the mole larger than the size of a pencil eraser?
E (evolving): Has the mole changed over time?

Skin cancer prevention is key.  The sun's UV rays  are the #1 cause of skin cancer. Follow these steps to defend against skin cancer:
  • Apply Sunscreen with SPF of 30 or greater at least 30 minutes before sun exposure. And then you need to reapply at least every 2 hours. Remember a-shot-glass-of-sunscreen does the trick. If you have very fair skin, or if you are swimming or sweating, you may need to apply more often.  Don't forget to apply SPF lip balm to your lips as well.  If you ever had sun burnt lips, you will know how important it is to protect your lips!
  • Wear sunglasses with total UV protection.
  • Stay in the shade as much as possible.
  • Wear wide brim hats or visors that protect your scalp, forehead, neck, face and ears.
  • Wear light clothing and if necessary purchase UV protective clothing available on line or in many sports stores.
  • Avoid being in the sun between 10 am and 2 pm which is peak UV radiation hours.
  • Avoid tanning beds.
