This past weekend, I had the pleasure of spending time at the Dublin Irish festival in Dublin, Ohio with my really great friends who are also my business partners on Team Younger You. We hope to make a trip to the real Dublin, Ireland someday! Anyhow, we have been planning the trip to Ohio since the end of Nov. 2017 when I bought tickets for a one day entry fee as my gift to team members in the area. I am all about making memories, which I knew we would do! Weekend getaway trips with great fiends are priceless and good for the soul! Don't you agree?
Before we all knew it, August 2018 was here and our bags were packed. I was able to find a really nice vacation rental by owner home in the Dublin, Ohio area. We all arrived on Friday early evening, and then our weekend adventure began. We loved the cabin. It was large and spacious and the best part was it was surrounded by woods and had a huge outdoor deck and fire pit table. The fire pit table was such a nice place to sit around first thing in the morning with our coffee, as well as late in the evening with our wine. The hot tub was not working, but that is story for another time. The place overall was quite lovely.
On Friday evening, we ventured into the little town of Dublin, and had a nice dinner on the outside deck of Oscar's. Our waiter was great. His name was Kofi, which means "born on a Friday" in Nigeria. Team member Sharon, who was born on a Friday, was inspired and she is considering naming her skin care biz "Afia" Beauty, which is the female Nigerian name for "born on a Friday'. Overall, the first evening out was great. We ended up back at our cabin, hanging out and listening (Aaron our driver said it was blasting?) to country music. Gina, Lisa, and myself stayed up until 2:30 AM. Gina had us laughing so hard that we cried.
Saturday morning we were all up and at 'em because it was Irish fest day! As we sat around the fire pit table, leisurely drinking our coffee, Kate-my sponsor, who I call our fearless leader of Team Bio-gave us a spontaneous talk on motivation and will power. She pointed out that as humans we are not necessarily wired to be motivated, but that motivation comes as a process of small steps being repeated that thereby lead to success. And the success encourages one to repeat the process. Kate is such an inspiration to all of us, and I am grateful for her friendship.
We arrived at the Irish fest just past noon. What a well organized, huge festival. It was a very hot, humid day. We were overwhelmed with all the activities, food and drinks from which to choose. Marlene, Team member, had been at the fest before, so she had a full agenda of ideas in mind that she wanted to accomplish--and off she went to watch and learn about Irish dancing and Irish cooking classes. The rest of us ventured through the many vendors of food and Irish items. We chose a lunch of fish and chips from the "Old Bag of Nails" food vendor that the locals directed us to try.
As we got our food, we heard music coming from a large tent across the field. We ended up watching a really awesome Irish band called Bearded Bastard Irishmen out of the Pittsburgh, PA area. They really knew how to rock it, even playing AC/DC shamrock style. The highlight was when the guitarist hung upside down off the metal stage ladder while jamming. There was so much to see, but we could not get to it all. There was a giant sand castle builder and walking Irish puppets. We shopped more, and listened to more Irish performers--it was such a grand day!
On Sunday morning, there was a large buck, close to the cabin. Marcus, Team member, got many great pictures. He was the happy winner of the R + F Multi-function eye cream too! As we said our good byes, we were all for Thankful for the weekend of camaraderie, friendships, and the R+F opportunity of "Changing Skin, Changing Lives."

This is the story of Sneaky the Cat. Sneaky belongs to my Brother and his family. They live in New Jersey, and their journey with Sneaky began about 8 months after the loss of their beloved pet cat named Stormy who was hit by a car last Fall. The family was devastated with the loss of Stormy, because she was a very unique and special cat whose story I will share here one day.
About 5 months after Stormy died, my Niece and Sister in law decided to volunteer at a local animal shelter to help ease the pain of their loss. The shelter housed 17 cats and the cats were mostly older ones who would never be adopted. My Niece's and Sister in law's duties included feeding the cats, cleaning the litter boxes, and cleaning the front office.
The people at the shelter kept asking them if they would consider adopting or fostering a cat, but my Niece and Sister in law were not sure, because the pain from the loss of Stormy was still raw, and they just weren't ready. Volunteering at the shelter was helping to ease their sadness on Stormy's tragic passing.
Three months passed, and one day the shelter was called because a cat was left in a crate in front of a New Jersey PETCO store. True to their calling, the animal shelter graciously agreed to accept this abandoned male cat and to take care of him until he could hopefully be adopted. One woman volunteer agreed to take on the abandoned cat, but she soon found out this particular big cat would hide out and only come out to be aggressive and attack her other pet cats.
My Niece was volunteering the next day, and the Shelter operator asked her, "Can you please take this cat because you are the only volunteer with no pets at home." My Niece asked her parents, and they apprehensively agreed. So they picked up the cat and brought him home and set up food and litter box in the basement of their home.
They described their new family member as "paralyzed with fear" and his pupils were always dilated---he was a true "scaredy cat." He hid in the corner behind some screens under the steps of the basement. And although the door to the basement was always open, he would not come up stairs. He stayed in the basement for 2 months straight. Every time they would bring his food, he would hiss and attack their hands. He earned the nickname as the "Beast in the Basement."
After a few months, they began to realize the cat was sneaking up the stairs in the middle of the night when the house was quiet and everyone was sleeping--thus how he earned his named "Sneaky". They could hear his footsteps at night, but Sneaky would always return to his basement safe zone. One particular night, my Brother was laying in bed and he heard the cat and he looked over, and their eyes met. Sneaky was scared to death and made a quick exit---but at least the family knew the cat was starting to be somewhat more comfortable in its new home.
My Niece said they made the decision to put Sneaky's food at the top of the steps to see if he would come up more often and during the day. He eventually came up, but he would stay near the stairs. There was no petting Sneaky, but they didn't pressure Sneaky. They literally let him have his own space and time to become comfortable.
Then out of no where, on one random day, he came over and rubbed his head on my Sister-in law's leg. That was the break through, and he has now become used to them to the point he wants to be with the family constantly and he is a very affectionate cat, and wants to lay on them! Wouldn't the cat whisperer be impressed?
I think this story has a lesson for us a humans in dealing not only with animals but with one another. Sometimes others are angry, insecure, abused, scared, isolated---and we need to show patience and empathy, kindness and tolerance and take time to get to know an individual who may have gone through a significant life event or trauma. A little love and patience will go a long way.....always remember that.
