Hyaluronic Acid in Skincare and in Acute Care Patches by Rodan + Fields

Hyaluronic acid is a compound naturally found in the skin. It is a complex carbohydrate molecule in the supporting layer of the skin called the dermis.  It is present in large amounts in the spaces between the skin cells and it is a powerful moisture-binding molecule. It binds water giving the supporting layer of the skin (the dermis) its volume.  It contributes to your skin's moist, plump and smooth look.  As we age, the ability to form new hyaluronic acid decreases.  For these reasons, the manufactured form of hyaluronic acid is a very common ingredient in different types of skin care products. There are 2 categories of hyaluronic acid:  High molecular weight and low molecular weight (also known as micro) hyaluronic acid.  The low molecular weight when applied topically penetrates the skin and biologically has anti-aging effects of minimizing fine lines and wrinkles. The high molecular weight hyaluronic acid is used in moisturizers and has immediate skin smoothing effects.  Plastic surgeons and dermatologists use hyaluronic acid in an injectable form which are formulated in the laboratory.  Popular names are Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane. Hyaluronic acid generally does not cause allergic reactions, so it does not require skin testing.   Various brands and formulations of hyaluronic acid perform differently and are best suited to different areas of the face but can also be used in the hands.  Hyaluronic acid treatments have been shown to stimulate and repair collagen, and the initial effects lasts from 4 to 12 weeks.  A pleasing effect can persist after repeated treatments.  Hyaluronic acid is one ingredient that works across every skin type, even oily skin, can benefit.
Drs. Rodan + Fields, cosmetic dermatologists, found that in their practice, patients were not as keen to get injections of fillers but would agree to topical application of hyaluronic acid.  What they came up with is Acute Care Skincare for Expression lines.  It is patented Liquid Cone technology in a patch that melts line-defying peptides and hyaluronic acid directly into a wrinkle for a more youthful appearance.  Used while you sleep, ten applications can last up to 8-12 weeks.

In response to your inquiry on the molecular weight of the Hyaluronic Acid.

Is LMW- hyaluronic acid used in any Redefine product? My concern is LMW-Hyaluronic Acid and micro-needling.
"Small fragments of the extracellular matrix component hyaluronic acid (sHA) are typically produced at sites of inflammation and tissue injury and have been shown to be associated with tumor invasiveness and metastasis. Exposure of human melanoma cells to small HA fragments leads to nuclear factor kB (NFk-B) activation followed by enhanced expression of matrix metalloprotease (MMP) 2 and interleukin (IL)-8, factors that can contribute to melanoma progression.  This suggests that LMW-HA in melanoma might promote tumor invasiveness by inducing MMP- and cytokine-expression.

According to another study, low molecular weight HA may also play a role in breast cancer metastasis.

There is abundant experimental evidence from the human physiology and biochemistry literature to support the basic notion that LMW-HA is inflammatory, pro-fibrotic, and associated with adult scarring phenotypes rather than fetus-like, scar-free, truly regenerative healing.  The latter is what we want in an any aesthetic procedure, or topical adjunct to a procedure, or just for topical use.

We strongly suggest you review any hyaluronic acid products you may use..."
