Is the Retinol You are Using Effective?

Retinol has been around in the anti-aging field for over 25 years, and it is one of the mainstay ingredients in many health and beauty products. In my blog, retinol-after-rolling-is-the-rave.html, I explain what Retinol is and how it works. The subject of retinol can be quite overwheming to understand.  And even as a physician, the literature on the topic is extensive.   There are so many retinol uses, types, percentages, over the counter forms, prescription forms, gels, creams--you get it, the review of retinol can be a daunting task.  Basically, what I want to know and I am sure you want to know is one thing.  Is the retinol product that I am using effective? Because if it is not, then we as consumers are throwing money down the drain.
Research has determined that retinol does break down every time you open the container. So often, in fact, that early research determined retinol was not effective, when later it was found that the retinol in question had simply been exposed to too much light before testing. Other studies, have shown retinol also becomes unstable in the presence of too much oxygen.  So both light and air cause retinol to break down into an oxidized particle.
After a month of use, your retinol cream will undoubtedly have less potency than when it is first opened. However, if your retinol cream contains other antioxidants, is encapsulated in liposomes, or packaged in a light-protective container, then your retinol will have degraded far less.
Unless it is specifically made as an airtight pump, many pump retinol products can become less effective because each time you use it, air is getting into the product.  Keeping the cap on your retinol tube, and keeping it out of the light are common sense storage recommendations.
Many good skincare companies take that into consideration, and package their retinol products accordingly.
As my readers are aware, I openly disclose that I am a Rodan + Fields Executive Consultant. Because Doctors Rodan + Fields are Stanford trained Cosmetic Dermatologist, extensive research goes into their products, including the packaging, before they are sold to the public.   What I can do for you is to assure you that YOU are getting what you paid for when you buy R + F products.
For our retinol products,  our Doctors took it a whole step further to make sure the retinol does what it is made to do, and it does it extremely well. They put the retinol in capsules!
Yep, R + F have specially patented capsules that you break open right before you put it on your face.  It is called REDEFINE NIGHT RENEWING SERUM(LOVE THIS STUFF)! It comes in little blue capsules which contain .075% Retinol.  The capsule has microsponge technology, and along with the retinol, the capsules contain peptides(what-is-a-peptide.html)and once applied to your face, the retinol and peptides are released ovenight for 12 hours in time released increments.  The time release capsule once opened,  allows the retinol to change from a liquid form to a powder form in 45 seconds. Once you try these pretty blue capsule beads, you will be able to feel exactly what I am talking about because your face feels like SILK!  Once you complete putting the blue capsule on your face, you then put a light layer of REDEFINE OVERNIGHT RESTORATIVE CREAM which has 0.05% Retinol in it.
The whole process above makes the retinol double the potency as if you are getting 0.15% Retinol. And again, since your skin is treated over a number of hours....BAM!  You get great results!
I often get questions about higher potency and prescription strength formulas, and I remind my customers that R+F products are multi-med therapy, so lower percentages of retinol can be used because there are other active ingredients, such as conic acid, peptides, and lactic acid which enhance the power of the retinol. Remember as well, too much of a good thing can have side effects, meaning higher percentage retinols can leave the face red and irritated appearing.
When you use the AMP MD Microneedling device prior to the blue capsule retinol serum during your nightly skincare routine, you will get even more dramatic results! See firming-looking-skin-without-surgery-using-micro-needle-roller.html.

Another R+ F regimen contains retinol. REVERSE REGIMEN, Step # 3 is a dual tube product and contains 0.7% retinol.  I use a dab of it, along with a dab of the Vitamin C, and it gives a double anti aging and brightening  effect!  I do this in the morning. And I put the cap on it right away!!! Hope you find this retinol information helpful! If you have any questions, please ask and I will do my best to answer ASAP.

Here is to Much Happiness & Good Health,
Your Friend, Dr. Younger You
